One thing we’re proud of? That as a luxury company, we’ve stayed true to our mission of reviving, growing and prospering the “Made in Canada” movement.
Before getting into the history of “Made in Canada”, it is important to acknowledge that Canada is built on the ancestral lands of various indigenous groups, including but not limited to the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. Their diverse cultures and histories have contributed significantly to the fabric of the nation.
According to a Government of Canada article, the name "Canada" derives from the Iroquois word "kanata," which means "village". Between 1534 and 1542, the French explorer Jacques Cartier undertook three voyages across the Atlantic, asserting French sovereignty over the land on behalf of King Francis I of France. During one of these voyages, Cartier overheard two captured Iroquois guides using the word "kanata," which translates to "village" in the Iroquoian language. By the 1550s, the name Canada began to appear on maps.

The first Canadian companies were formed during the British and French regimes who competed for dominance in the fur trade.
The Hudson’s Bay Company, which had a mix of French, British and Aboriginal employees, came to dominate the fur trade in the northwest from Fort Garry (Winnipeg), Fort Edmonton , Fort Langley (Vancouver) to Fort Victoria. Its trading posts later became the large cities we’re familiar with today.
During the 19th and 20th centuries, immigration to Canada experienced a significant surge. By the 1960s, approximately one-third of the Canadian population was comprised of individuals who did not have British or French ancestry. These immigrants brought with them valuable skills, including agricultural knowledge as well as expertise in working with metals, wood, stone, leather and textiles. These contributions played a crucial role in building Canada’s reputation in locally produced goods, economy and flourishing trade opportunities.
For the team at Monte & Coe, there’s a deep connection and touch of nostalgia to the roots of “Made in Canada”. Our family members who were first generation Canadians, played a significant role in Toronto’s garment industry as skilled sewers or textile suppliers. We owe a debt of gratitude to them and all the other contributors who laid the foundation for the “Made in Canada” ethos. It is our mission to revitalize, expand, and enhance our global reputation, ensuring that their legacy thrives and prospers.
Before the industrial revolution, most clothing was locally sourced. Goods were purchased by necessity, and whom they were purchased from was based on their reputation for quality and durability.
Present day, local manufacturing has drastically decreased and declined over time. According to the Canadian Encyclopedia, since the early 2000s, the manufacturing sector in Canada has declined significantly. And between 2004 and 2008, about one in seven (or 322,000) manufacturing jobs had disappeared. While this trend isn't unique to just Canada, it's simply an outcome of the increase of mass consumerism, which has set the framework for fast fashion and cheap labor. This model is predicated on the mass-production of cheap garments, churned out at such a rate that unsold pieces have to be burned or discarded into landfills.

Bonus: Gift ideas to spark joy in those near and dear.
]]>A common method to show appreciation within the corporate world is through gifting, and when done so correctly, corporate gifting can make meaningful impressions.
Think of corporate gifting as an investment into your company. The return on investment? Talent and client retention, acquisition and satisfaction.
Corporate gifting doesn't guarantee results you want.
‘Throwaway gifts’ are just as they sound, gifts that are often thrown away or disregarded. These could be water bottles or coffee mugs, tacky t-shirts, key chains, or pretty much anything of cheap quality. These items often flash brand logos, slogans, and bright colours, and are likely to end up in the recipient’s garbage bin.
The truth is, rather than creating a lasting impression, these types of gifts merely clutter up both the physical and mental space of their most valuable corporate relations.
Keep reading to learn more about corporate gifting and tips to help ensure that your efforts are well received.
How to make a positive and lasting impression with your partners and clients through corporate gifting.
What do you want your gift to represent? When corporate gifting, remember that the gift is also representing your company, business and professionalism.
What does your company align with that you want the receiver to know? What does your company stand for?
Here are two examples:
Are you a Canadian based company? Or perhaps your client is. Gifting ‘Made in Canada’ not only represents a part of home, it also shows that you value local businesses.
If you’re a Canadian company or have Canadian clients you want to impress, gift ‘Made in Canada’.
More and more clients and corporations alike are putting emphasis on the importance of sustainability.
According to a 2021 study conducted by Business Wire, sustainability is rated as an important purchase criterion for 60% of consumers. This number continues to grow as younger generations who value sustainable brands take on more purchasing power.
As consumers become more aware of the environmental issues of mass consumption and fast fashion, supporting eco-conscious and slow fashion brands are becoming more and more important.
Support companies who are actively involved in making a positive impact on the environment and gift items that are made to last a lifetime.
Q4 combined with holiday festivities makes it one of the busiest times of the year. The recipient of your gift will be able to tell if your gift was rushed, or not very well planned out. Make sure you stay organized and have your gifts planned out far in advance of the holidays.
An even better idea is to gift items outside of the holiday rush. This allows you to stay top of mind in a possibly more advantageous time of year. After all, corporate gifting is also a strategy to invest and benefit your company.
Depending on how many people there are, you could consider giving them a few options to make sure they get something they want and/or need. Giving options also ensures that your gifting efforts don’t go to waste!
Add an on-site shopping experience to your next event and give the gift of choice. Curate the products you would like to gift based on budget, style and preference. Then allow clients to pick which product they would like.
At Monte & Coe, we offer on-site custom gifting. Clients can watch as their luxury travel accessory gets embossed and leave with a personalized gift that they will remember. Discover the art of craftsmanship through our live event embossing services.
Depending on where you’re hosting the event or where your clients are traveling from, you can opt to have the gifts drop-shipped later on.
Sometimes the smallest gestures have the biggest impact.
Personalization can be as simple as adding their initials to an elevated gift.
At Monte & Coe, we offer bespoke embossing and monogramming to take any gift to the extra mile.
A personalized and handwritten letter or note attached to the gift makes it all the more impactful. Tie it all together by including a warm sentiment inline with your gifting strategy.
There's good reason behind the country’s popularity. From friendly locals, delicious food, stunning landscape, incredible nightlight and so much more.
As lively as it is, there are a few caveats to visiting a highly popular travel destination. While tourism greatly benefits the country’s economic health, tourists often succumb to “tourist traps”, or miss the opportunity to experience an area through a local’s eyes.
This Summer, we had the pleasure of welcoming a new intern into our team who's roots are tied to Thailand. With her expertise and knowledge, we’ve put together a list of recommendations and travel tips that might help an eager tourist.

Bangkok’s original red light district, Silom Road is known for being diverse, lively and just downright fun.
Take a stroll down Patpong Road for its nightly street market as well as its infamous go-go bars.
Make sure to purchase a tourist sim card when arriving at the airport. Having data and a phone number will definitely help you get around the city.
For transportation, it’s better to download apps such as Grab Taxi and MuvMi, which are ridesharing apps similar to Uber. It allows you to book your taxi/Tuk Tuk ride in advance at a much cheaper price considering that some Taxi or Tuk Tuk drivers may take advantage of foreigners and charge unreasonable fees.
While trying street food is a must-do when visiting Thailand, you must keep in mind that many foreigners have food poisoning when they are not careful of what they eat. Some food may upset your stomach considering that you are not used to some ingredients.
We hope this travel guide inspires and helps you on your next journey to beautiful Thailand!

Role: Sales and Marketing
Where/What: Croatia

Where/What: “Glamping” in the woods in between Tobermory and Sauble Beach.
When: Mid-July
Featuring the Leather Weekender Bag in Black - $895 CAD
Best part: Hiking and taking a dip in the Tobermory Grotto. As cold as it was, I consider it the most beautiful water I’ve ever seen… If I dare say, even nicer than Portugal or anywhere in the Caribbean.
If you're wondering where to stay in Tobermory/Sauble Beach/Bruce Peninsula area, you can check out the Airbnb I stayed at here. We loved the "glamping' experience because it was the perfect combination of nature and comfort.
Travel Tip: Always have a backup plan for extreme weather when camping. There was a tornado warning for a portion of our trip. In case things got ugly, we Googled all the nearest motels, inns, and hotels that had vacancies.
Role: Finance and Accounting
Where/What: Florida
When: May
Best part: After two years of not traveling (due to the pandemic), my wife and I were finally able to spend a month in Florida. This trip was a little different than our past vacations though…..this time we had two little kids along for the ride (Beau - 2 years old, Shay - 2 months old). Our first family vacation was a big success.
Travel Tip: Traveling with kids is hard!
Role: Creative Direction and Ecommerce
Where/What: Abruzzo, Italy
When: Early June
Best part: Eating at 3 Michelin star Ristorante Uliassi for an unforgettable dining experience and relaxing on the beautiful beaches of Pescara.
Travel Tip: If going to Italy, bring stretchy pants.
Role: Corporate Sales and Operations
When: Mid June
Best part: Renting a boat in Belcarra and taking it down the Indian Arm. It felt like we were in a scene from Jurassic Park! The most beautiful landscape.
Travel Tip: Only bring a carry on to avoid losing your luggage and waiting in lines.
How to avoid over packing: Plan out outfits in advance using versatile pieces that can be styled in a variety of outfits for different occasions and days of the trip. i.e: A pair of jeans can be styled for night or day, depending on the shirt and shoes its paired with.
Role: Marketing Intern
Where/What: Da Nang, Vietnam
When: End of August
Best part: Waking up to the sound of the ocean every morning. The pool villa we stayed at has a private beach. Every morning, we would wake up to the sound of the waves crashing against the sand outside.
Travel Tip: If you are traveling to a beach in South East Asia, book a pool villa near the beach instead of a high rise hotel. There are many good pool villas with affordable prices. You will also have a better experience since there is more privacy.
Cheers to the end of our favourite sunny season. It was an epic one!
Jet lag is a symptom that occurs after traveling quickly across time zones and your body’s typical rhythm falls out of sync.
Jet lag happens when you alter your natural circadian rhythm by traveling to a new time zone. Think of the circadian rhythm as the internal clock your body uses to manage sleep/wake times.
Jet lag normally just lasts for a few days, but there are a few tips and tricks to reduce to quickly overcome the symptoms.
When arriving to your new destination, try forgetting about your old time zone as soon as possible.
If it’s still daylight, stay outside and try to remain relatively active. If you arrive at night, it’s best to go to bed and rest, even if you aren’t tired.
The same goes for meal times. Eat meals according to your current timezone.
Your technology will likely update clocks automatically, but if you have a manually set watch, set it to the new time as soon as you depart.
Make sure you sleep at times that are the most appropriate for your new time zone. Is it night time at your destination while you’re in the air? Try to sleep during your flight.
Is your flight a red-eye? Try to sleep throughout the whole flight but keep in mind that you’ll likely have to stay awake for the whole day in your new time zone. Once you arrive at your destination, avoid the urge to nap during the daytime.
Dehydration can make the symptoms of jet-lag much worse. Drink plenty of water before, during and after your flight. Airplanes have dry air, counteract its effects by drinking enough water.
You might be exhausted when you arrive at your destination, but it’s important to stay awake while it’s still daylight.
Jet lag interrupts your internal clock because your exposure to light changes when you travel to different time zones. Light therapy and exposure can wake up your body and reduce the release of melatonin hormones that make you sleepy.
Fight the urge to sleep, get a little active and soak up the sun!
Consider melatonin to help you get sleepy or stay asleep throughout the night while you adjust to the new timezone.
To avoid unwanted side effects, don’t take more than 5 mg of melatonin at a time. Avoid taking melatonin for more than three nights as your body can become reliant.
Talk to your doctor or healthcare practitioner before taking any new medication.
Traveling for a particular event or meeting? We recommended arriving at least two days earlier to allow your body to adjust to the time zone.
Everybody gets jet lagged and its perfectly natural. Whether you use these tips or not, jet-lag symptoms will go away within a few days.
Get out there, enjoy your vacation and #carryuswithyou!

]]>Gearing up for your next getaway? Keep your journey easy and breezy with the following road trip and packing tips.
It’s incredibly important to get enough rest before your trip to eliminate any risk of dangerous drowsy driving. Try to get at least seven hours of sleep a night for at least two days before your trip, this helps build your energy reserves for the journey long ahead.
If you’re getting tired while on the road, it’s best not to push through it. Listen to your body and pull over for a break when safe to do so. As a rule of thumb, try to get a break in for every two hours of driving.
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Stay alert by drinking plenty of water.

Nothing’s worse than being lost with no backup plan.
Set yourself up for success by getting a general idea of directions in advance.
Most travellers nowadays opt for directions via google maps or GPS. As convenient as they are, technical issues can never be fully eliminated. Keep a physical paper map on hand in case your device runs out of batteries or you experience connection errors along your journey.
Keep rush hour times in mind when coming in or out of the city. Although it's nearly impossible to foresee traffic caused by road side accidents, GPS apps such as Waze, help notify drivers of any potential issues, provide live traffic updates and indicates alternate faster routes.
The majority of cars now have USB outlets. Bring your phone charger to ensure that your phone remains accessible throughout the ride. This is especially important if you are using your phone for directions or GPS.

Ever have issues with over packing? Or maybe you're the type to accidentally under pack? We’ve compiled a foolproof list of packing essentials that will likely work for any leisurely weekend trip. Best part is that all these items will fit perfectly in your weekender bag.
One swimsuit (Bather - Shibori Swim Trunk); two pairs of versatile pants that can be styled up or down (Parachute - Linen Pants, LL Bean - Classic Fit Jean); one comfortable outfit that you can lounge, get active and/or sleep in (Bather - Sweatpant, Bather - Crewneck); two t-shirts (KOTN - Essential Crew); one versatile top that can be dressed up or down, such as a button up, blouse, or jacket (Park & Province - Collar Shirt); two shoes max, keep it to one casual pair such as sandals (Birkenstock - Soft Footbed) and one stylish pair that can be styled for different occasions (Nike - Air Max Dawn); last but not least, and we’re assuming you won’t need as much support on it, don’t forget your undergarments and socks.
If you couldn't tell, the main theme of what to pack revolves around versatility. You want to pack items that can be styled in variety of ways. Pack versatile items that can be mixed and matched to create dozens of outfits.
What you wear while travelling impacts your comfort as well as how much you can fit in your bag!
Wear your bulkier items while travelling to save space in your weekender. Don't be fooled, bulky doesn't mean uncomfortable or hot and stuffy - unless you're bringing a winter parka.
Jinyoung of GOT7 wearing The Monte & Coe Wool Weekender in Black at Icheon Airport
Depending if you're headed straight to an event or if you'll have time to rest and refresh upon arrival, you can wear your bulkier items such jeans or sweats, and sneakers. For the top portion of your outfit, keep things versatile with breathable layers you can take off or on throughout your journey.
Keep it to essentials that you know you'll use everyday of your trip. Our favourite toiletry bag? The Dopp Kit of course!
The secret to any dopp kit is how you pack it. Think of it as a game of Tetris. Pack wisely; the tighter you pack, the more you can fit.

Office work will likely be different across sectors and industries and there won’t be a one size fits all return date.
Because of the constant changes in risks and regulations, companies must remain flexible in how they reshape the back to work model.
As companies look ahead to what work will look like post-pandemic, the majority are choosing between three approaches.
A full return to the office or work environment will be necessary for hands-on industries such as engineering, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, etc.
Many workplaces are opting for a hybrid of in-person and remote work. Employees may continue working from home and occasionally work from the office. This allows for a reduction of people in the office at a time, while maintaining the flexibility of working from home.
Wool Briefcase in Grey & Navy - $695 CAD
Other companies are continuing to remain remote. Lockdown measures have given companies the opportunity to explore remote work, and it has proven to work for many. These companies must continue to seek ways in which they can improve company culture, productivity, and technology.
With the fast moving changes Covid-19 and post pandemic presents, management and board directors are responsible for guiding their teams into new routines.
Management can be difficult to begin with, nonetheless throughout a pandemic. Feeling the pressure? We complied some tips to help you and your teams transition:
With the constant changes, keeping flexibility in mind is the key to success. Flexibility includes the ability to adapt, as well as meeting the increased demand for more choice in where employees work.
Due to the evolving nature of post pandemic life, keep communication open between leadership and the rest of the team. The more your employees are in the know of plans and changes, the better. Having open communication will make the process of adjusting to the new work environment a lot easier.
Keep soliciting feedback as well as listening to it. Actively listening to employee feedback, as well as acting on it boosts employee-leader relationships and benefits the company at large. Due to this complex and unique situation, receiving feedback will help you find the right solution. The transition back to work will feel different for everyone, and hearing their concerns will build a mutually supportive environment.
Acknowledged the discomfort. The jump back into the physical work environment will have its own hurdles. Be kind to yourself and know that the nerves, distress, confusion or frustrations you’re feeling aren’t your fault, and that everyone else is likely feeling the same. With that in mind, this is a time for us to support one another and really connect empathetically as a team.
You might feel excited to be going back to the office, that's great, but remember that others might feel differently. Ask questions and make space for those who are more anxious.
How does your schedule change when you head back to the office? Are you going back to work everyday or using a hybrid schedule?
With two years of remote work, the thought of a morning routine might seem like a distant memory. If a commute is a part of your transition back to work, you’ll have to factor this into your schedule and the commitments you make throughout the day. Reawaken old habits such as the time you need to get up to make it to the office, meal prepping meals to save time throughout the night, or going to bed earlier.
Bonus tip: Prepare your work bag the night before. Everyday Tote Bag in Black - $750 CAD
Going back to the office gives you a chance to separate work and home life. When you’re sitting at a makeshift desk in your kitchen or bedroom, it can be almost impossible to separate work from home. Do you want to turn off your emails at certain times? Do you prefer to communicate by Slack or video call? The hybrid model of going back to the office will complicate these preferences. It’ll take trial and error before you and the team can effectively get settled in. Think about what works best for your productivity remote and in-person, and share these findings with your manager.
You may feel like you work better from home, you’re not comfortable coming back to the office, or perhaps your management team is refusing to listen and meet your needs. Set and respect your boundaries. If the people in charge ignore worker concerns, and questions or guidelines feel arbitrary or punitive, there are many other organizations hiring fully or largely remote positions.

We’ve compiled a few tips that will help make you feel more organized and prepared for your upcoming family vacations.
Always check the climate and weather of your destination.
Is your destination cold? Hot? Humid?
If your trip is in a nearby location and/or is starting in a couple of weeks, you can get a stronger prediction using a 14 day weather forecast. Keep in mind that weather tends to fluctuate and 14-day forecasts are not always accurate.
If you're planning on traveling to a foreign area or an unfamiliar destination, google the general climate and weather forecast for that month.
I.e. Google: “Weather in Costa Rica in March?”
This way, you will be able to get a general idea of how hot, cold, and how much rain there will be. Then, pack accordingly depending on the weather forecast.
Whether you're packing a suitcase or just a carry-on, ensure that you have everything that is needed to enjoy your trip.
We recommend categorizing your list to stay organized and easy to read. Categorize between people (yourself, children, whoever else you might be packing for), types of items (clothing, toiletries, miscellaneous) or a mix of both.
When curating your list, keep in mind how many days you and your family will be away for. If you’re away for x days, how many pairs of socks will you need? Focus on essentials and versatile pieces.
Most airport regulations only allow a quart sized bag of liquids onto the plane in a carry-on.
According to the TSA, “You are allowed to bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes in your carry-on bag and through the checkpoint. These are limited to travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item” (2022).
Even if you’re checking in luggage, packing full sized products can use up valuable space. For example, it’s very unlikely that you and your family will use up a whole tube of toothpaste within a week. Depending on how long your trip is, travel sized products are typically more than enough.
Looking for the ultimate toiletry bag? Check out our ethically made and eco-conscious Dopp Kits. For more ideas on how to expertly pack your toiletries, check out this blog post.
In packing both adult and child doses of over-the-counter medications, have peace of mind knowing if medical ailments arise, everyone in your family will be covered.
If you don’t pack an over the counter medicine stash, or happen to run out, make sure you know the general name of the medication. Brand names of generic medications are different in different countries. For example, you might not find Tylenol in a foreign pharmacy, but you will find paracetamol or acetaminophen.
Shoes often take up the most space in the luggage. When packing shoes for a trip, make sure to only bring versatile pairs you’ll get plenty of use out of. Consider one pair of running shoes/sneakers for outdoor and everyday use, a pair of flip flops as indoor slippers or for the beach, and a final pair that can be dressed up for any occasion.
Travel Hack: Wear your bulkiest shoes on the plane, and stuff your other shoes with smaller items such as socks!
Ever consider just packing carry-ons for you and your family? At least an hour can be shaved off travel times if you skip the bulky luggage. Skip the long check-in and wait for the luggage carousel, and opt for a carry on. Did you know our weekender bags were designed to perfectly fit below an airplane seat or an overhead compartment?
Looking for a high quality yet family friendly carry-on bag? We’ve got you covered.

Combine it with one of these destinations, and you’ll be the ultimate eco-traveller!
This city is a long-standing winner for most sustainable. Not only does Zurich consistently hold businesses and residents accountable for their environmental actions, it expects the same from its tourists as well.

Stockholm is known for its many eco-hotels (what’s that? Check them out here), and holds its sustainable reputation by making everyone aware of the city’s eco-goals. Recycling is huge in Stockholm, and unlike some places, the rules are very easy to follow!
On top of that, Stockholm makes it a point to make its citizens aware of where their goods come from. It’s easy to know the source of your meal at a restaurant, or the clothes in the shops.
And, of course, getting around the city is easy with their pedestrian-focused streets and superior public transport system.
Get ready to ride, because Berlin is perfect for biking. See the city in an eco-friendly way while working your legs! Berlin makes the list since it has cut its CO2 emissions by one-third since 1990, and plans on being climate neutral by 2050.

A world leader for sustainability, and on track to be carbon-neutral by 2025, is Copenhagen. This city lives and breathes eco-friendly, and that goes for tourists as well.

As for tourism, the Icelandic Tourism Board has created a certification for businesses and public establishments who are accepted as sustainable, entitled ‘Vakinn’. Look for the Vakinn logo to be sure that you are supporting sustainable tourism while in Reykjavik.
Once again, Lisbon makes our top picks list! Not only is Lisbon great for remote travel and destination weddings, it’s sustainable, too! It was the EU Commission’s Green Capital for 2020, after the city expanded its park area by 300 acres.

Getting around the city sustainably is a breeze in Lisbon, with their widespread use of electric vehicles and public transit. Even their tourist favourite, 'tuk-tuks’, are electric! Sustainable travel is made possible with these 10 cities, so you can see the world without destroying it.
Hudson Bay Company, Canada’s iconic department store and Monte & Coe, a small batch luxury travel essentials brand based out of Toronto, have announced a collaboration on an exclusive collection of one-of-a-kind travel essentials. Celebrating the very best of Canadian design, the iconic Hudson’s Bay Points blankets are repurposed into handcrafted luxury travel essentials.
“This project between two great Canadian brands, one rich in Canadian history in Hudson’s Bay and the other [Monte & Coe] with a growing notoriety for creating travel essentials focused on quality craftsmanship, ethical manufacturing, and eco-focused raw materials,” says Andrew Coelho, Co-Founder at Monte & Coe, “exemplifies those qualities collaboratively by creating a capsule collection centred around upcycling the iconic HBC points blanket while showcasing Canadian design and craftsmanship.”
Monte & Coe’s signature raw materials - wool and vegetable tanned leather - will continue to be the focal point of this design, however the wool will be replaced by the points blankets, which have been custom treated for increased durability and will function as the main body of all designs.
The entire collection will be handcrafted in Toronto alongside local artisans to create a capsule collection that features a silhouette of their signature weekender bag, a custom made oversized tote exclusive to HBC, as well as a dopp kit to compliment, all of of which have been custom embroidered to feature the iconic points. The tote and weekender feature one of a kind luggage tag, available only as part of this collaboration. The collection will come in both Scarlett and Charcoal across the 3 styles.
“Upcycling is immensely beneficial to the environment at large. Nearly 60% of all clothing produced ends up in a landfill or incinerator within 12 months and if retailers and brands can work together to reduce those statistics, then I think it’s a huge win for everyone. That’s why we are super proud of this project. Not only does it limit waste from entering landfills, but it signifies the growing awareness from brands of all sizes to do their part.”

Along with air travel, tourism in general leads to pollution and overexploitation of natural resources. In a perfectly enviro-friendly world, we would avoid these emissions and all other negative impacts of excessive travel completely. However, it would be unrealistic to expect avid travellers to stop pursuing their favourite hobby entirely.
Your individual actions may seem meaningless in the (very) grand scheme of things, but it is true that every little bit counts! Here are a few things you may want to consider bringing with you throughout your travels:
Photo by Unsplash - Bindle Bottle
If you don’t have one already.... Where have you been? With thousands of water bottles on the market, you’re bound to find the right bottle for you. And hey, bringing your own water with you is always a good idea, you never know when you’ll need it.
Snacks are essential for long-haul flights or road trips, and can also help save you money during your trip if you don’t want to eat at restaurants all the time. Bring some collapsible containers with you to carry your nibbles, or take them along on your food adventures to bring any unfinished food home after eating out (less plastic, and less food waste!)
A compact set of utensils is both convenient in a pinch, and great for the environment. Avoid single-use plastics with this small and simple solution.
Reusable bags should be a given at home, but consider bringing them with you for your travels, too. Use them for food runs, beach days, picnics and more.
If you’re a coffee lover, be sure to carry a reusable coffee cup with you when you visit all those cafés! Check out this cool collapsible one that fits nicely in your carry bag.
No one really wants that snow globe, right? Or that keychain, fridge magnet, t-shirt or tote bag. These little knick knacks are often cheaply made, and are likely to end up in the bin pretty quickly.
Consumerism is a massive issue, but you can do your part by buying less and focusing on the experiences and the beauty around you, instead of the objects that will only weigh your suitcase down.
You may feel like you need to do as much as possible during your vacation, but that will only lead to exhaustion and a lot of photos of things you can’t even remember. Get more out of your travels by slowing down the pace of your trip.

Rather than touring all of Europe, try visiting one or two places and really settle into the lifestyle there. It is a very different experience, and will likely leave you feeling more relaxed and knowledgeable about that particular place in the world. And, long-term rentals often come with discounts!
Check out this list of the best places to go for long-term stays.
The best part of travelling is that you get to offset all that delicious food you eat with tons and tons of walking. Walking is truly the best way to see a city, and is good for both you and the planet.
Photo by Unsplash - Chris Arthur Collins
However, if you’ve got a long distance to travel (or just want to move faster), a bike is another excellent choice. Most places in the world have bike rental services, and some cities have a bike sharing system for you to make use of. The bottom line is, avoid creating emissions as much as possible.
If you’re flying long distances, you’re contributing even more to the large carbon footprint of the travel industry. Ease your mind and do your part by participating in a carbon offset program!
A carbon offset program is a way for you to balance out your carbon footprint by providing monetary support to projects that aim to reduce carbon emissions worldwide (AKA renewable energy projects). So, fly to that exotic destination, but mind your footprint by supporting those working to save the planet. Here’s a comprehensive list of the best programs out there.
Some airlines are better than others when it comes to sustainability. Surprisingly, there are some that use renewable biofuels, which are fuels produced using things like wood chips and agricultural waste. These fuels can reduce carbon emissions by 80%!
Here are some airlines that are committed to supporting sustainable aviation fuel:
These renewable sources of fuel are becoming more widespread for air travel, so keep a lookout to see if your favourite airline is joining the party.
Don’t sleep on the wonders of your own country! Chances are, there’s a lot that you have yet to discover close to home. Save the planet (and your wallet) by taking advantage of the sights and activities available to you in your city.
Check out your local museums, try a new restaurant, take a long bike ride, or simply walk until you can’t anymore. You’re sure to find something special.
They say that true sustainability is to buy once, reuse forever. I mean, technically each time you use something more than once, you are reusing it. Our sustainable, ethical travel essentials fit the bill for long-lasting use. Durable, high-quality, and made in Canada, look no further for your travel needs!

Incentive travel is a corporate effort to motivate employees, or sometimes partners. Usually, employees must meet a pre-defined goal (sales targets, for example), or be a top performer to qualify for the incentive. The travel often consists of group activities and team building exercises, combined with free personal time and networking opportunities.
Travel incentives are all-expenses paid vacations. The trip can range from a few days to a week or more. Some companies offer incentives for employees to take their whole family, but that is more rare. As it is a company incentive, there must be something in it for the employer as well.
Incentive travel is a great way to show recognition for employees outside of a cash bonus. While everyone loves cash, incentive travel benefits both the employer AND the employee.
Not only is it a chance for employees to connect and make memories, it also boosts engagement and productivity when returning to work. Employers can get to know their employees and provide mentorship outside of the regular workplace.
For employees who do not earn the incentive, the very existence of the program can boost their motivation and drive to achieve more. It may seem like a more involved effort than typical monetary rewards programs, but often the trip is planned thoroughly through an outside source, and does not require as much financial investment than you may think.
Keep it classy and play it safe at Secrets The Vine, Cancun. This resort is highly rated, yet offers the most bang-for-your-buck when it comes to corporate retreats. Sparkling Hill will cater your trip to your specific needs, with a particular goal in mind. The Blue Lagoon retreat is one to remember for years to come. This hotel and spa duo has everything you need to make your employees happy and comfortable. A day in the blue lagoon waters and dining as a group are more than enough to motivate your top performers. Not all company retreats should be packed with team-building exercises. This one is packed with surreal views.
Unique may not be the first word that comes to mind when considering California, but this meditation retreat most certainly is. With options for 3 or 5 day long workshops, your employees will get a chance to de-stress and reconnect with themselves. Adventures are fun, but taxing, and this one provides the opportunity to relax in a new environment while bonding with yourself and your team.

Vacations are exciting, and it’s a given that you’ll want to share the best bits with your friends and family. However, keeping your circle updated 24/7 is truly NOT necessary. I hate to break it to you, but they don’t care if they have to wait a week to hear all about it. In fact, they’ll probably prefer it that way!
That’s not to say you have to keep your excitement to yourself, though. Keeping a travel journal is a wonderful way to keep track of the highlights of your time away, and can even help you remember the little things that make for stronger, more vivid memories. Journaling is also a great way to stay present and mindful while on the road, and you’ll be grateful 5 years from now to have such a special keepsake (far better than any souvenir).

Easier said than done, but vacation is supposed to be a getaway. Work is most likely a big thing you are trying to get away from, so it’s important to leave it all behind while you’re away.
But, my job is important! My team will collapse without me.
MMM, not true. Your team, clients, or managers are already aware that you’re on vacation (if they aren’t...that’s just ditching), and the appropriate accommodations should be made well before you leave. How do you do that?
Tie up loose ends, don’t leave any emails unanswered. Most importantly, come up with a really good out-of-office response note.
Photos by Unsplash - Toa Heftiba and Christopher Ott
What better way to escape the fast-paced, high-pressure life you lead than by detoxing digitally while away? Here are some things to help you do it:
Why does it matter what anyone else is doing at home? You’re on vacation! Enjoy it fully by leaving social media behind, both sharing and consuming.
Your phone lights up hundreds of times each day, and a good majority of them are not important (especially during your time off!). The important stuff will still be there when you’re ready to see it.
Still don’t think you can’t stick to it? Just remove the apps completely. Keep only what is necessary, such as your banking app or map app.
Photos by Unsplash - Jess Bailey and Covene
Nothing is worse than post-vacation dread. All those neglected emails and tasks have to be done eventually! Make a realistic timeline for yourself by preparing in advance. Not only do you need to make sure you’re leaving in a good state, maybe by cleaning the whole house and getting ahead on work, but plan for your return carefully. Set aside time for the day or week after your return to tackle any things that need to be done.
Photo by Unsplash - JE Shoots
It’s a natural instinct while traveling to take a picture of everything. But, that often leaves you with thousands of photos of random things you probably won’t recognize a year from now. Additionally, that many photos take a long time to sort, and it’s unlikely that you’ll have the patience to go through them all once you’ve returned. So then, what was the point of taking them?
Of course you’ll want to capture memories that you can look back on, but capture too many and it will become a chore. Also, you don’t want to be seeing your whole trip through a lens, you want to see it for yourself.
We could all use some opportunities to disconnect, and your vacation time is the perfect excuse.
In the ever-growing world of fashion in a consumerist culture, the term ‘ethical’ gets slapped on brand mission statements and garment labels more and more often. The expectation for fashion brands is rising by the day, as consumers become more aware of the various impacts their purchases have on both people, and the planet.
There is no one definition for ‘good ethics’ when it comes to fashion, because there are so many things to consider. In a broad sense, ‘Ethical manufacturing’ refers to a production process that takes into consideration workers’ rights, animal rights, and environmental impact. That is, an ethically manufactured bag would be made in alignment with what is best for the people, the animals, and the planet.
There are several benchmarks for ethical manufacturing, as there are several components to the manufacturing process.
The fashion industry is one of the most notorious for poor working conditions and exploitation of workers. This can include providing unliveable wages, utilizing child labour, cultivating hazardous working environments, and forcing overtime hours.
Photo by Unsplash - Rio Lecatompessy
Globally, 1 in 6 people work in the fashion industry, most earning less than $3 a day. On top of being underpaid and overworked, people working in the manufacturing stage of fashion often fall victim to poorly maintained working environments, resulting in both small and large-scale fatal disasters. It has now been 8 years since the Rana Plaza tragedy, yet these issues remain very present. In the documentary ‘The True Cost’, these working conditions are exposed, along with the many other flaws involved in the fashion system.
Truly ethical brands will be transparent about their efforts to ensure workers’ rights and conditions are met. If not outlined on their website, consider contacting the brand directly with your questions. Most actually will respond!
‘Fast Fashion’ has taken the world by storm, and despite the rising number of climate change activists speaking out against the issue, the fast fashion industry remains rampant. The resources used to manufacture a clothing item or accessory go beyond the fabric and finishings, extending to water usage, toxic waste from chemical dyes, carbon emissions, and microfibre pollution.
Photos by Unsplash - Marcus Spiske and Ethan Bodnar
The manufacturing process CAN be environmentally ethical and sustainable. Look for brands that use recycled fabrics, or renewable resources as their main materials. Also, most environmentally conscious brands will give insight on their factories and production processes. Check out our page here on what environmentally-conscious manufacturing looks like for Monte & Coe.
Among each individual’s definition of ‘Ethical manufacturing’, animal rights can play a varying role. Certain consumers are 100% against the use of any and all animal products and byproducts in the fashion industry. Others value ethically and sustainably-sourced animal products from the brands they purchase from. Either way, transparency is key, and most consumers want to know the details of the methods used to extract animal materials before purchasing.
To determine a brand’s ethical stance when it comes to the animals, see if they have listed the types of fabric or materials used to make the product. Common animal products include wool, leather, and silk. If the origin of the materials appears unclear, don’t be afraid to ask!
Curious about the animal-sourced materials we use at Monte & Coe? Learn about our sustainable wool here, and our vegetable-tanned leather here!
To be sure that a brand is manufacturing ethically in terms of the people, the planet, and the animals, check out this list of fashion brands ranked, otherwise known as the Fashion Report.
